During the 1960s an experimental satellite communications facility was built buy the Naval Research Laboratory in Accokeek, MD at former Nike missile base W-45. The site was equipped for satellite tracking, data processing, and various communications experiments. One of the primary uses of the facility was a project called “Compass Link”. Compass Link was established during the Vietnam War to transfer high priority photos between Vietnam and Washington, DC. The facility was also heavily involved in the testing/development of commercial and defense satellites, the MILSTAR program and the FLTSATCOM program. In the late 90s the facility was decommissioned and auctioned off to a private investor. Everything at the site has been totally demolished.
