St. Elizabeth's East Campus Reno
Didn't see it going in this direction...
It's official: the St. Elizabeth's East campus will be the new home of the Washington Mystics and the practice facility for the Wizards.
It's been long rumored that Mayor Muriel Bowser was working with 'Zards owner Ted Leonsis to turn the former psychiatric hospital into a practice facility for his team and now it's confirmed. Tomorrow morning, Bowser, Leonsis, and a host of other Very Important People will formally announce the plans of the stadium.
In a release, Events D.C. says that the total cost to build such an arena will cost $55 million. $23 million of that will be paid for by the District, while $27 million will be paid by Events D.C., which is funded through taxpayer dollars (the rest will be paid for by Leonsis' Monumental Sports & Entertainment).
So yes, as Loose Lips pointed out, this new facility will be roughly 90 percent funded by your tax dollars. Sports!
Anyway, when all is said and done, the 118,000-square foot facility will seat 5,000 people and Events D.C. says it will "attract more than 380,000 annual new residents and visitors per year to Congress Heights." Addition, Events D.C. says that the arena will produce "more than 600 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs," with a priority of those jobs going to Ward 8 residents.
Construction for the area is schedule to commence in 2016 and they're hoping it'll be done by the fall of 2018.
