If you're not eating blowfish, I'd call your doctor every effing day until they do some serious checking. The in / out 'it's an allergy' diagnosis seems a little quick.

Sidenote - Coughing Blood would be a cool name for a punk band.
"As a community we are united in our struggle, we say yes to life, no to things which threaten to destory us. Today we move towards a lifstyle of human values, based on love, governed by honesty, and secured by trust. No longer do we stand alone. We must be as open as the air, with the will to survive, the will to learn, and the will to create. We are a creative force motivated by each other. For the will of the people is the greatest force conceivable." - written on wall of mental hospital

Oh man.. I love this stuff.
1st-- Bronchodilators will do NOTHING for you to help cough up what ails you. If you're having trouble breathing or wheezing-- well yeah, then they might but when it comes to inhalers... anything other than albuterol (Now as ProAir, Ventolin etc. since the propellant restrictions on CFC are complete) can cause more trouble than it's worth.
2nd-- Codeine, while yummy & a great side effect profile... it's an antitussive meaning it will help you stop coughing and the one thing you'll want to do it cough this up & out. Any prescriber giving you that or Tussionex should have their license revoked.
3rd-- coughing up blood typically isn't the sign of something in your lungs but more a sign of something going on in the bronchioles at the furthest.
Lastly, then I'll get off my soap box-- you might be perpetuating a severe upper respiratory infection. With that you can often find yourself coughing hard enough to rupture a small blood vessel. It's a pain to get it to heal but the WORST news of this is that if you keep rupturing/ disturbing it with severe coughing fits (the black stuff is more than likely old blood & mucus) you are at risk for a pulmonary embolism-- a tiny chunk can do horrible things.
IF you feel weaker, short of breath or like an elephant is sitting on your chest, or if you have clamminess & are more lightheaded than usual (had to pull that punch) that's emergent.
Anyway... at the very least you should definitely see someone.

^ I love your pharmacology linggo!

    1. Nebulized hypertonic saline would do the trick to make him cough. But the bronchodilators would help move things up since the airway is open and when he coughs, it's easier passage going up because of less constriction. With our CF kids, we give their nebs followed by hypertonic saline just to help get the secretions out.

    2. Work hates using antitussives and anti-gas medications just for the fact that they tend to mask symptoms and cause more problems than they are being helpful.

Yeah... but I'm not "cupping" Brian for anything amount of money ... CF is an exacerbation of all mucous secretions. I don't think he has a lot to bring up err go... "coughing it out" won't help him much. Blood tends to be a whole different story. I say we get him in for a bronchoaveolar lavage... You hold one end I'll hold the other, Brev...

P.S. Glad I'm not the only dork in the room.

It happens mostly at random now.
    Mostly just thick mucus.

    I feel perfectly fine.

    It's nice having doctors around.
