As for equipment I usually have...
-Dark clothes, I prefer rip-stop military stuff
-Kevlar lined waterproof tactical boots (maybe my best investment)
    -2 flashlights w/ spare batteries
    -asbestos rated mask
    -gloves
-first aid & plenty of paper towels
    -mace
    -knife
    -cell phone & 2-way radios
-ID! if your caught without it they hold you longer
    -poncho
    -business cards
    -pens and markers
-chalk! there is always a chalkboard and NO chalk!

    -Camera & lenses
    -Flash
    -Tri-pod
-Spare batteries, spare mem-card and lens wipes
-zip lock bags to keep camera safe in rain or stream crossing

    -1 liter of gatorade
    -a snack

Thats my typical pack. Specific locations may require more or less.

Overall I prefer winter exploring over summer since fewer people are out during the winter, in general I think it's safer. Only 2 advantages to summer exploring that I can think of are 1) Extra Tree/foliage cover if you're relying on that to stay unseen and 2) Earlier sunrise and later sunset so you can get out at a location at 5:30 am and have full sunlight.

Today we move towards a lifstyle of human values, based on love, governed by honesty, and secured by trust. No longer do we stand alone. We must be as open as the air, with the will to survive, the will to learn, and the will to create. We are a creative force motivated by each other. For the will of the people is the greatest force conceivable." - written on wall of mental hospital
