yea yea i know trashed, smashed, etc but still that place meant a lot to me.
I'm with you KTS, Henryton was my first un-escorted exploration. It thought back on it more than any of the other places I've been. And this really fucking pisses me off. And of course they did it in the only section of the complex that was wood, the rest was concrete and would have never gotten to that point of destruction.
Henry is definitely done for now, they will either secure the hell out of it or demo it. And now the little fucks will move on to other spots, probably Springfield.

Dude I would hope that you called someone on that if you really saw smoke.

The more I think about this the more it pisses me off. That site was one of my first hospitals and it holds a certain sentimental value to me.

actually we heard sirens when we were getting back in my car. ( i went with a couple other photography friends of mine ) So we didn't bother calling anyone.

This was also the first place i went to as it was about 7-10 mins away from my parents house and where I was living at the time. I'll miss it

What the fuck...No! I just got around to going there, and am not ready to let go of poor H-ton.

I love Henryton, and I will miss it alot when it does inevitably get demolished because of this. But I can see it from the fire fighters stand point. I grew up in the Westminster Fire Dept, and I've been to the Sykesville Dept a number of times. When I went to Henry this past spring that auditorium floor was full of holes, so much so that I didn't even go anywhere near the stage. And to have to go in there to extinguish a fire, that is a whole different story. You wouldn't be able to see where you were going, and the chances of a fire fighter getting hurt are going to be much greater than a standard building that is currently in use. Plus the money and resources that were put into fighting that fire. This one was a far cry from the garage fire from a year ago. And thanks to the little fucks that insist on doing this crap, really, there isn't much that can be done other than demo it or put a crazy tight security force in there, and I doubt that the state is going to fund that latter option.

Im real mad. I heard something about Henryton rd being closed due to a fire this morning on the way to work. I just kept telling myself it wasnt henryton. Im so pissed. But they would have to go find the other places. Which wont be anywhere near as easy as finding the places everyone knows about. I agree. Lets go find this kid and beat his ass to a pulp. Or just set him on fire. I believe in eye for an eye.

As much as everybody hates to admit it, it's a matter of proximity. The first time that I went (2003? 2004?) my friends and I ran in to some local kids, who said everybody knew about the place. There is a high school within a 5 minute drive. Combine that with the minimal security and you have an after school hangout where everyone goes to blaze, make out, and break shit... the usual escape from parents.

"have joo heard about t3h sp00ky hospital?"
    "no way, show me!"

Tell 5 people who tell 5 people....... and it spreads like the plague. plus the myspace profile...

I guess I'm saying that these same vandalous tweens won't be going on a burning spree.

P.S. This Sucks... but come on guys, we'll live.

When shit like this happens it sucks but at the same time it's more motivation for me to forgo family, friends, and social obligations to travel and see as many places as possible in the time I have.

Today we move towards a lifstyle of human values, based on love, governed by honesty, and secured by trust. No longer do we stand alone. We must be as open as the air, with the will to survive, the will to learn, and the will to create. We are a creative force motivated by each other. For the will of the people is the greatest force conceivable." - written on wall of mental hospital

Fun fact: kts went to the middle school across the street from said high school.

I will also agree that the hospital just down the road will not be the next party spot, it's around too many active things and patrolled too well.

An interesting article from the Philly Examiner:

Abandoned Sykesville hospital should be razed, firefighters say

(Courtesy of Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department)
A firefighter battles the blaze at Henryton Hospital Center in Sykesville Wednesday morning.

Kids talk of ghosts who haunt the place.

    Homeless people hang out there.

And firefighters have grown tired of putting out blazes at Henryton Hospital Center in Sykesville, abandoned since 1985, when it last treated people with developmental disabilities.

Several mysterious fires in recent years have local firefighters calling for Henryton’s demolition.

“That is an extremely dangerous facility, and we’ve been down there too often,” said Bill Rehkopf, spokesman for the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department.

The most recent fire started about 4 a.m. Wednesday in an auditorium. It took a few hours for nearly 80 firefighters from three counties to control the blaze because, like most fires at the complex, nobody reported it until it grew large enough to be seen from a distance.

But its 19 buildings, where doctors treated tuberculosis patients from the 1920s to the 1960s, have become a seedy, secluded spot for teenagers and homeless people to hang out, spray graffiti and perhaps even commit arson, Rehkopf said.

“What I’m really afraid of is someone down there is going to get hurt or killed,” Rehkopf said.

The buildings are so dilapidated that firefighters don’t venture inside to battle the blazes, he said.

The state should raze the complex on the 53-acre site, surrounded by Patapsco State Park, or at least fence it off or renovate it.

The state has tried to sell the Henryton site for more than 20 years but has found no takers.

An appraisal should be done by January, and a firm that has expressed interest will be contacted then, said Ian Tinsdale, spokesman for the Department of General Services.

If the firm is no longer interested, the center will be open to the public to buy, he said.

Some of the buildings at the complex are historic, so permission to raze them may not be easy to get, and putting a fence around the site may not be practical, said John Hammond, a spokesman for the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

“I don’t know what would be involved in fencing a 53-acre area in,” Hammond said. “And the next question would be: ‘Will that keep people out?’ I understand there are no-trespassing signs, and they don’t seem to keep people out.”
