    Default Army Ammunitions Plant Meet

The plan is for a full day exploration of the Indiana Army Ammunitions Depot. The buildings we will be checking out most likely include --

Power Plant (Building 401-1), a seven-level building with roof access. This is the smaller of the two that exist; the other has a locked exterior fence, but if we can find a way in, we can do that plant instead.
Main laboratory, not explored on the last trip. Based on the far smaller Laboratory (Building 706-3), where there was much to see and photograph, this one might present even greater finds.
Some of the white roofed buildings in the Propellent and Explosives area (See map in the other thread). They are quite large and should be stable.
Some of the buildings in the shipping area. They looked to be three floors high and spread out quite far.
And any other building that looks interesting. There are literally hundreds.

A side trip, if I can gain access (this part is owned by a state park) --
Black Powder Manufacturing Facility. Never put into operation, although it was built in the late 1970s. Easy to get in, but a large group of people over a 15 ft. fence is not doable -- especially since its next to a road.
River Ridge Housing. Supposedly has original 1940s-era appliances, flooring, etc.

Will cost some money. Guard fee is $20/hour flat for everyone. Insurance fee is minimal. Would like to have at least five to make the trip affordable, and no more than 15.

Someone mentioned Sept 1 (Labor Day), but that can conflict with many people's plans. Someone else mentioned Sept 8 and 15. Throw out some dates you're free, and I'll make a tally.

I haven't received my schedule for Sept yet. So I have no idea. But I would assume something around the 8th and 15th would work. I've been wanting to make a road trip down there for quite sometime. Maybe I can try and make a weekend out of it.

I could pull a Saturday-Sunday if it wasn't on Labor Day weekend possibly. I won't get my schedule from my professors until late August, so any day so far is good with me.

Yeah, when it gets closer we can narrow the dates down. Are there a good number of other sites to see around the depot?

Well, here is a map of the buildings that I could identify. There is one more power plant, and just oodles of other buildings. Many are just so obscure in the grass and foliage that it is hard to make out or even see.

Louisville is only 10 minutes away and has --

Louisville Varnish Company, which is do-able with a few people, not a large group.
Four-story building on Broadway, but it was in an alley with needles, and the only entrance was through a narrow, metal chute.
Orabrocker Mansion (sp?) that has vintage furniture and etc. inside supposedly (I can get permission for this as well if you want).

Two distilleries near Frankfort (Old Taylor and Old Crow), about 45 minutes away. But one is not do-able due to presence of owner often, and a lack of parking.

Cincinnati has an entire neighborhood, the Crosley Building, and the infamous Stearns-Foster complex.

I'm down. Later in Sept is probably better, Labor day weekend I have too much going on @ home.

There are a number of good sites in IN, the few I'm thinking of are about a 4 hour drive north, and there is a large asylum us MD'ers would pass by on the way. No getting in but would be worth a short stop for exteriors.

This sounds so great, I'd love to tag along. Generally speaking weekends work.

Seems like the overall consensus so far is the later dates, specifically, not Labor Day weekend. My Octobers will be filled with fall-foliage hikes and drives.

So it looks like mid-late september. Just not laborday weekend.

I'm willing to be a carpool car.

I can take 4 plus me. Little cramped in the back, but I drive fast to make up for it. Just gimme a heads up on those dates.

Seicer - You said the larger of the 2 power plants isn't accessible because of a locked exterior fence. If we're being escorted by a guard, do they not have keys?

    No --

The larger of the two plants has an exterior fence that had a pad lock, but we didn't scout out for another entrance. The entire complex has an exterior fence, but this is the only building for some reason that has a fence inside the complex. As for doors, etc., most are just unlocked and open -- and he was scouting them out for us.

Sept. 23 and 30 are both open for me so far

There may be a few from the south coming up, and both dates are so far open for them. I think the consensus from everyone I've contacted is a later September date, so I guess its just one over the other for the two dates

Ahh thanks for the reminder. I can't get out of work at all on the 23rd due to a Ravens game. But the 30th looks good so far.... who else is available?

Anytime from the 6 - 24 September would work for this body if you don't mind the tag along, I'll make cookies. I'm going to be moving back down to KY here shortly... the h-unit is already there. I'd totally be up for this & I'll drive ... as far as carpools go
