Would you really want to take the chance and try to dig them up?

I wouldn't waste the effort. We've already established that they weren't graves.

Besides, the logistics don't make sense. Why would they bury bodies in the basement of a building? I've heard of graves being moved on this campus, but I highly doubt they would have been moved into a building.

Few, I feel much better now. Besides, isn't it illegal to dig someone up?

    Default Closed Mental Hospital Searched.

Closed D.C. Facility for Mentally Retarded Searched for Remains.

Investigators are poring over a former District facility for mentally retarded adults in Maryland and DC, looking for remains, ABC 7 News has learned.

NewsChopper 7 captured pictures of MPD canine units on the scene Wednesday, assisting the D.C. Office of Property Management's Protective Services division.

ABC 7 News received pictures Monday from a source that appeared to show graves in a cellar of Patuxent, a former asylum for mentally retarded adults that was open from 1925 until it was closed by a federal lawsuit and the Justice Department in 1991.

ABC 7 News contacted County and D.C. police Tuesday about the pictures. The Protective Services division of the District's Office of Property Management responded to the scene between 10 and 11 p.m. Tuesday, said Robin Jasper, the OPM director.

Jasper initially told ABC 7 News that remains, possibly human, had been found. Jasper now says she misspoke and that remains have not been found. The investigation remains ongoing.

MPD sources say if any human remains are found, County Police would be the lead investigative agency. MPD would assist the investigation, if their help is requested, sources said.

The former Patuxent asylum was notorious for its poor conditions and alleged patient abuse. Following The Facility's closure, the city placed hundreds of residents in privately operated facilities around the D.C. area.
